For some, Hollywood seems like another world. But this Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., students will get a chance to experience a day in the life of a celebrity at the Fall Block Step Show at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Sticking to the theme of “Lights, Camera, Action: We’re Going to Hollywood,” The Fall Block Step Show committee members are planning a night that includes a red carpet with photographers, press wall, prizes, giveaways and not to mention, plenty of steppin’ action. Throughout the week they have been preparing to go to Hollywood with a slew of events including free massages and a Greek forum.
The performing acts are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. The participating sororities are Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and the fraternities are Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi. Sorority Zeta Phi Beta from George Mason University will also be performing. The winning team will win a $2,000 grand prize, said Christie Black, the marketing director for the committee.
Black said stepping is a tradition in the black community from churches to dance crews. She also said The Fall Block Step Show will help highlight that cultural aspect.
“(Stepping is) exciting and entertaining,” Black said. “It gives students a chance to take part of something they may have otherwise not been a part of before.”
Carter said the show on Saturday holds a certain air of mystery, which adds to the excitement of the event.
“(The performances are) very secretive,” Carter said. “The competitors don’t want anyone knowing their themes. They want to surprise the audience.”
