‘9’ scores high marks for originality

For all the relatively simplistic plot devices and scant character development, “9” is saved by its beautifully unique animation and maturity. The surprisingly dark tone, which is established early on by the discovery of a human corpse, persists throughout as the film effectively earns its PG-13 rating.

It’s no shocker, then, when we discover that the two main producers are Tim Burton (“Sleepy Hollow,” “Big Fish”) and Timur Bekmambetov (“Wanted”), neither of whom are strangers to the potential bleakness of humanity.
