After a week of tireless campaigning, WVCW announced the unofficial results of the SGA elections on the Thursday morning broadcast.
Gabriel Walker is the presumptive SGA president, with Roberto Celis for vice president and Bhumi Dave for executive director.
The announcer named the 25 newly-elected SGA senators. While the results remain unofficial until judicial approval, Walker said he does not expect the votes to vary by much.
Even as it the rained, candidates were seen actively campaigning around campus. Although each candidate was promoting their own cause, SGA presidential candidate Josh Ronk said all the candidates did a great job emphasizing how much voting really matters.
The Walker-Celis campaign won with 1,395 votes. The Lynch-Goldshine campaign followed with 766 votes. The Ronk-Mace campaign had 574 votes. The Robertson-Meeks campaign had 314 votes.
The students were given three ballots: one for senators, one for the proposed constitution and bylaws, and one for the executive ticket. The votes totaled 3,049. More students voted for the candidates than in the constitutional ballot.
There were 2,612 students who voted for candidates, representing 8.5 percent of the 30,661 students at VCU. All enrolled students were eligible to vote.
An overwhelming 73.5 percent voted in favor of the constitution. The new constitution will go into effect next semester.
Director of Communications Justin Greene said he expects grievances to be filed concerning campaigning and election results. The judicial branch deliberated this weekend to determine the authenticity of the grievances currently filed.
The content of the grievances remains confidential until after deliberation.
According to Kanwar Anand, elections committee chair, students have until Wednesday to file grievances about the results.
The official results are expected to be posted on the SGA Web site before noon on March 30. The newly-elected SGA administration will be sworn in at the end of April. Grievances can be sent to elections@vcusga.com.
