Something fashionable this way struts

Fashion, dance, music and design will take over the Stuart C. Siegel Center Saturday at 7 p.m. for the VCU STRUT Fashion Show, the first major event of Richmond Fashion Week.

The STRUT Committee, composed of 15 VCU students, picked a “Karneval” theme for this year’s show. Two stylists incorporated the theme into the runway’s looks. They conducted research on which retailers’ styles matched the theme, said Director of Marketing and Fashion Jerrica Washington.

Designers, including American Apparel, Designer Remix and Brooks Brothers, auditioned to showcase their garments in the show and design coordinators selected whose designs qualified.

Washington said she hopes this year’s show will be like no other. She said she believes that by keeping details under wraps, audiences will have something to look forward to.

“It’s all about the suspense,” Washington said.

The week following the show will consist of different types of events to get students excited for the show and raise awareness about STRUT.

Senior Coordinator for Richmond Fashion Week and former STRUT member Jason Primrose said Richmond Fashion Week owes much to STRUT.

“Most of us involved in Fashion Week come from STRUT, whether styling, modeling or directing.” Primrose said. “When we set out, STRUT was one of the first (groups) we wanted involved.”

Stefa’nie Thompson, a mass communications major, said the show will be entertaining for regular spectators, not just fashionistas.

“It’s becoming more than just a fashion show,” Thompson said.

Doors open for the VCU STRUT Fashion Show Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Siegel Center. Tickets are $5 for VCU students, $10 for general admission and $15 at the door . They can be purchased at the Siegel Center Box Office and Break Point Games Room in the Student Commons.
