MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Rams scored two victories this past week. On Jan. 14, the Rams defeated Towson, 78-71. Senior Eric Maynor (Raeford, N.C./Westover) scored 27 points and dished out nine assists. Sophomore Larry Sanders (Fort Pierce, Fla./Port St. Lucie) recorded a double-double as he scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while blocking three shots.

On Jan. 17, the Rams blasted Old Dominion 61-44. Sanders was the high-scorer for both teams with 16 points. Maynor scored 14 points and had nine assists while sophomore Brandon Rozzell (Richmond/Highland Springs) added 12 points. VCU defeated Georgia State Wednesday. 65-50. The wins improved VCU’s record to 7-1 in the CAA and 14-5 overall. The Rams return to action Jan. 24 against George Mason at the Siegel Center.

Maynor was named CAA Co-Player of the Week. It is the second time Maynor has won the award this season. In two games against Towson and Old Dominion, Maynor averaged 20.5 points, 9 assists and 3.5 rebounds. Maynor also leads the CAA in points (21.8 ppg) and assists (6.2 apg).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Rams won two games during the past week. The Rams defeated William and Mary, 69-52, on Jan. 15. Four starters scored in double figures. Senior Radoslava Bachrova (Varna, Bulgaria/Daytona Beach C.C), freshman Jennifer Lane (Wichita, Kansas/Wichita Heights) and Junior La’Tavia Rorie (Charlotte, N.C./Harding University HS) scored 13, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Quanita Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) pulled down another double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. On Jan. 18, the Rams crushed Delaware, 68-45. Hollingsworth and junior Kita Waller (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville) recorded double-doubles. Hollingsworth scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Waller scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. For Hollingsworth, it was her 46th career double-double. Rorie and Moss scored 15 and 12, respectively. The victory gave head coach Beth Cunningham the most wins in VCU women’s basketball history with 95. The victories improved the Rams record to 4-1 in the CAA and 14-3 overall. The Rams next host Hofstra on Jan. 22.

For the second time this season, Hollingsworth was named CAA Player of the Week. In wins against William and Mary and Delaware, the senior averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds. This season Hollingsworth is averaging 14.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
MEN’S TENNIS
The Rams were perfect in the 4×1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center this past weekend. On Friday, the Rams took down both Georgetown and Richmond, 5-0. On Saturday, the Rams defeated Temple, 4-0, and James Madison, 4-1. On Sunday, the Rams beat Longwood, 5-0. Senior Martin Schulhauser (Karvina, Czech Republic), the 2008 CAA Rookie of the Year, went undefeated in five matches. Schulhauser won four singles and one doubles match. Sophomore Bobo Delemark (Danderyd, Sweden) and junior Thibaut Charron (Sens, France) also scored victories in four singles and one doubles match.
WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
Sophomore Quina Fortune (New Orleans/St. Mary’s Academy) and senior Verniece Johnson (Mineral/Louisa) posted victories at the Navy Invitational over the weekend. Fortune placed first in the 200 meters with a time of 24.92. She also took second in the 60 meters with a time of 7.79. Johnson won the long jump with a jump of 18.01 feet. Freshman Heather DelaCruz (Williamsburg/Lafayette) set a personal best in the 3-kilometers with a time of 10 minutes and 59 seconds. The Rams next meet will be the Hampton Invitational on Jan. 24.
