With indisputable talent and ear-friendly tunes, it is a wonder why it took Santogold so long to release her own record. The 32-year-old artist (born Santi White) is no stranger to the music industry: she majored in music in college and was a record company representative and producer.

With indisputable talent and ear-friendly tunes, it is a wonder why it took Santogold so long to release her own record. The 32-year-old artist (born Santi White) is no stranger to the music industry: she majored in music in college and was a record company representative and producer. In April 2008, she took the big leap and released her self-titled, debut album.

Tracks like “Creator” and “Unstoppable” draw obvious comparisons between Santogold and M.I.A.-pounding drums and electronic mixing paired with plenty of fast talking. Branding Santogold as another M.I.A. is not fair, however, as most of the tracks on the album hold a strong, 80s new wave influence-her vocals prove to be lush one moment and fierce the next. “Starstruck” is a perfect example of this combination with just the right amount of energy and chillness. The song opens with a slow rhythm followed by ultra-heavy Cure-esque synthesizers while Santogold ponders through strong vocals, “What is it you got I don’t get?”

“L.E.S. Artistes” is strangely reminiscent of The Police with a modern twist-smart, poppy lyrics about sacrifices she’s had to make in the music industry.

Santogold’s love of 80s pop is perfectly updated for the millennium in the calm and cool “I’m a Lady” which will have listeners humming its refrain, “And I like sometimes to wave it high/Up where everyone can see/I’m a Lady.” The closing number “Anne” features Jamaican drums, wolf-howling and vocals, making for a very special combination.

Overall, Santogold’s debut album is truly refreshing-packed with plenty of activity, but is not too in-your-face. She is able to pull influences from various places, but sounds unique at the same time. An authentic addition to the music industry, Santogold’s future albums certainly will be well anticipated.
