Pastor’s two goals bless VCU with win

Sophomore Laurel Pastor (Springfield/West Springfield) scored two goals in VCU’s 2-1 overtime victory against Delaware this past Sunday. The victory improved the Rams’ season record to 8-5-1 and 4-1-1 in the CAA.

VCU started out fast, in the beginning of the first half, The Rams applied pressure to the defense of Delaware.

Folk Fest fires up friends, family, festival-goers

The scents and sounds of fried food and world music filled the air at the Richmond Folk Festival this weekend. Music lovers packed the area between the James River and Second Street for three days of sun, socializing and sophisticated song.

This year marked the return of the Richmond Folk Festival following the departure of the National Folk Festival, which settles in one city for a three-year span.

Starr Foster’s ‘Submerged’ sopping with soul

Sheryl Crow is scheduled to serenade the 7,500 capacity Siegel Center Saturday for the Genworth Children Advancement Classic Concert, in which eight local children’s charities will evenly split all proceeds.

Down economy affecting students

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine released his annual revenue report that calls for 5 to 7 percent in funding reductions for higher-learning institutions. VCU has not yet developed a plan of action, but is not treading unfamiliar ground. The plan cuts more than $10 million from VCU’s 2009 budget.

Critical Care on the rise

The first patients will be moved into VCU’s Critical Care Hospital Tuesday. The building features 15 floors of intensive care units including extensions of the neonatal and surgical trauma ICUs and the Evans-Haynes Burn Unit.

The $192 million building surpassed the proposed budget of $184 million.

Clinton rallies for Obama at Commons

Former President Bill Clinton spoke at the University Student Commons Plaza Sunday night at a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama. His support for Obama elicited cheers from the large crowd and drew several protesters.

Clinton received enthusiastic reactions to topics such as college tuition, energy and foreign policy.
