Va. sees rise in community-college nursing grads

The number of students graduating from nursing programs in Virginia’s community colleges grew 67 percent over the past five years.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s office said Friday 1,365 students graduated from state community college nursing programs last year, compared to 817 in 2002-03.

Richmond Times-Dispatch endorses McCain

The Richmond Times-Dispatch endorsed Republican Sen. John McCain for president on Sunday, praising his experience in foreign policy and his views on the economy and health care.

Researchers downplay MRSA screening

Three VCU epidemiologists are downplaying the value of mandatory universal nasal screening of patients for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. They are arguing that proven, hospital-wide infection control practices can prevent more of the potentially fatal infections.

There appears to be a new sheriff in town coming off the break, as Alex Dynan took a commanding four-game lead in the standings with a 13-7 performance in week seven. Executive Editor Matt Doyon is still in second place despite a 9-11 performance but Jerome Foster is right on his heels after going 11-9.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Rams have been picked to win the CAA title for the second consecutive year. VCU has won the last two CAA regular-season titles. Last season, VCU won a record 16 conference games. Senior point guard Eric Maynor (Raeford, N.C./Westover) was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year for the second year in a row.
