Anniversary rained on but not washed out
Rain diminished the crowd at VCU’s 40th anniversary celebrationat Monroe Park, but didn’t stop dedicated fans from seeing their favorite local bands perform. The five participating bands were Becky Taylor & The Open Fire, Unheard Concept, Earthtone, Antero and The Taters.

I want to thank Catherine MacDonald and Rich Griset for their fair and balanced Oct. 20 article, “Palin rallies at raceway.” I can always count on Catherine and Rich to bring me news and analysis that is relevant, accurate and nonbiased. I am glad they are a part of The CT team.
How Tina Fey saved NBC
If you haven’t seen Tina Fey as Gov. Sarah Palin on “Saturday Night Live” the past few weeks, you might as well be living under a rock. When Sen. John McCain picked Palin as his running mate, the media and celebrity bloggers quickly discovered the uncanny resemblance between Palin and Fey.
VCU Police take a bite out of crime
After the high-profile shootings of two students this year, some campus community members are concerned about growing crime rates at VCU. The heightened fear is not matched by what the latest annual campus security report suggests.
When compared to 2006, arrests in 2007 by the VCU Police Department were up by 23 percent, but overall crime for VCU is down by about 20 percent.
Robbie’s road to recovery
Business administration and music major Robbie Berriz was shot during an attempted robbery Sept. 26 on Goshen St., causing him to lose full movement of his left arm. This event raised safety concerns around the campus community and caused Berriz and his parents to question how long the first year student will continue studying at VCU.
Richmond street cleaning: necessity or nuisance?
It is 8:30 a.m.-time for Ken Lawshe to leave for work. When he walks out to the street, his car isn’t there. The good news is it wasn’t stolen. The bad news is it was towed for street cleaning.
In order to go to work, VCU alumnus Lawshe has to locate his car and retrieve by paying a hefty sum.
VCU turns 40
The university’s “Fortieth and Forward”-themed anniversary commenced this past weekend with a landmark dedication at the Siegel Center. On Saturday, the Monroe Park Festival drew a crowd, despite the threat of rain.
The celebration began Friday with the dedication of landmarks commemorating important contributions of the MCV campus to the medical community.
Report: Iranian president has fallen ill
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has fallen ill due to exhaustion brought on by his heavy workload, the state-run news agency reported, quoting a close associate.
The announcement comes as doubts have surfaced about whether Ahmadinejad, who faces strong criticism from opponents, will seek re-election next year.
Iraq’s main Sunni party suspends contacts with US
Iraq’s largest Sunni party said Saturday it has suspended official contacts with American military personnel and civilians after the killing of a man near Fallujah.
The Iraqi Islamic Party accused the raid of having a “hidden political motive” in an indication of rising tensions in Anbar province ahead of provincial elections, due to be held by the end of January.
US considering implications of nuclear decline
The U.S. arsenal of nuclear weapons, midwived by World War II and nurtured by the Cold War, is declining in power and purpose while the military’s competence in handling the world’s most dangerous arms has eroded. At the same time, international efforts to contain the spread of such weapons appear ineffective.
