PROPOSITION 8: Unfair and unconstitutional
With the U.S. Supreme Court overturning of the 2000 same-sex marriage-Propositon 22 ban in California in the spring of 2008, the legalization of gay marriage became a real possibility in this country-however, on Nov. 5, that possibility became yet another fight for equality.
International students invited to Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is fast Thursday and many VCU students are traveling home to be with loved ones. Some international students, whose homes are thousands of miles away, have been invited to share the holiday with American families.
“We currently have about 35 families who have opened their homes to share this important holiday with students,” Pamela Haney, director of International Student and Scholar Services, stated in an e-mail.
VCU, Richmond recycling more; what about dorms?
Recycling long has been a necessity in preserving the environment. The amount of material recycled is growing each year in Richmond and VCU, but some dorm residents think more could be done to accommodate recycling.
According to Darlene Mallory, support services manager of the City Clean Commission, recycling bins in Richmond are provided only to single-family homes and apartment buildings that have four or less units.
Presidential Search Committee discusses funding, construction
Turnout was sparse, but passionate comment was not lacking at the Presidential Search Committee’s third town hall meeting Nov. 20.
Students, faculty and alumni voiced complaint about the lack of funding for their programs and the desire to have a president who will strengthen the School of Humanities and Sciences and other less developed branches of the university.
Pakistanis rally against suspected US strike
Pakistanis on Sunday protested a suspected American missile strike. According to intelligence officials, the strike killed a British citizen linked to a plot to blow up jetliners. Protestors are calling for their Western-allied government to stop the cross-border attacks.
