Florida Air Academy (Melbourne, Fla.) point guard Ben Eblen became the first member of the 2012 class after signing his Letter of Intent during the early signing period on Friday. The 6’0 185 guard averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists during his junior season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Three free throws with 2.1 seconds left from senior Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria/Daytona Beach C.C.) gave the Rams a 59-57 win in their season opener over Liberty. The win was a first-round victory in the Preseason WNIT. Bachvarova and Kita Waller (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville) each scored 13 points. Senior Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) added 10 points and eight rebounds. In the second round, the Rams fell to North Carolina, 77-65, in Chapel Hill. Senior Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) led all scorers with 20 points in the loss.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Piotr Dybas (Jaslo, Poland) and senior Joey Wingo (Richmond, Lee-Davis) finished 97th and 116th out of 212 runners, respectively, in the NCAA Southeast Regional at Tanglewood State Park in Clemons, N.C., this past Saturday. Dybas finished with a time of 33:11.3 and Wingo finished with a time of 33:40.4. VCU did not place among the top 29 teams in the meet.

Four Rams achieved All-CAA honors. Senior Dirk Dittrich (Stuttgart, Germany/Quenstedt-Gymnasium) made the first team. Senior Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge/Osbourne Park) made the second team. Junior Jorit Loehr (Bremen, Germany) was named to the third team while sophomore Thomas Huepper (Olpe, Germany) made the All-Rookie Team.
VOLLEYBALL
The Rams defeated Hofstra 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 15-13) this past Friday. The win clinched a first-round bye in the CAA Tournament. Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo/Brazil/Colegio Dourado) had 15 kills. Senior Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany/Sportsgymnasium) had 16 kills, while freshman Marketa Janeckova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Cajkovskeho Olomouc) added 14 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. The Rams’ bid to host the tournament as the top seed fell short Sunday in a 3-1 (16-25, 23-25, 25-16, 19-25) loss to Northeastern. Ivana Rich (Cumberland/Cumberland) had 12 kills in the loss while Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) registered 10 digs.
