AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price is now $3.42 for a gallon of regular gasoline. It likely will fall faster and further in the days ahead due to the recent sharp drop in the price of oil.

Virginia’s prices were slightly below the national average of $3.45 on Wednesday. That national average was down from $3.66 last month, but up from $2.77 last year.

In Virginia, the highest gas on Wednesday was in Charlottesville, where the average was $3.61. The lowest average was in Richmond, at $3.33.

AAA said improving gas inventories following the refinery and pipeline shutdowns because of Gulf region hurricanes was another reason for the decrease in gas prices.
