Junior Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg/Blacksburg) won his second CAA Golfer of the Week award after finishing in a three-way tie for third place at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club. He finished one shot out of first place.

FIELD HOCKEY
VCU lost its second straight overtime game to Delaware this past Sunday. The loss was the Rams fourth straight and dropped their season record to 4-6 and 0-2 in the CAA. Sophomore Rosan van Eijkeleburg (Middleburg, Holland/Nehalennia) scored her third goal of the season in the 52nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. The game remained scoreless until Delaware scored the game-winning goal 12 minutes into overtime. VCU is back in action Friday, Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. when they take on Hofstra.
MEN’S TENNIS
This past Sunday, junior Thibault Charron (Sens, France) won the ‘A’ singles draw at the Old Dominion Invitational. In the final, he faced teammate Nicolas Vinel (Metz, France). Charron defeated Tytus Stempniewicz of Hofstra (6-0, 6-1) while Vinel defeated Dan Couzens of Old Dominion (6-1, 6-0) in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Charron beat Matt Fawcett of ODU (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8)) and Vinel beat Simon Janik of Kennesaw State (6-4, 6-3). In the semifinals, Charron defeated Yakov Diskin (6-4, 6-2) while Vinel defeated Davy Sum of Campbell University. Then Charron defeated Vinel (6-3, 6-3) to capture the title. Charron and Vinel teamed up and made it to the finals of the ‘A’ doubles, losing to Davy Sum and Lubos Sobotka of Campbell 8-6. Freshman Jordan Dyke (Alexandria) won the consolation final of the ‘B’ singles, defeating Lorenzo Sison of Christopher Newport University (6-3, 6-4).
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Freshman Mihaela Bunea (Bucharest, Romania) made it to the semifinals of the ‘A’ singles draw at Old Dominion Invitational this past Sunday. Bunea defeated Lauren Clifton (6-0, 6-1) in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals Bunea beat Erin Clark of the University of Richmond (6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8)). She then lost in the semis to Nadine Fahoum of Old Dominion (6-4, 6-2). Freshmen Alex Bara (Oradea, Romania) and Ana Bara (Oradea, Romania) made it to the quarterfinals before losing. Alex lost to Charleen Haarhoff of ODU (6-2, 6-2) while Ana lost to Katie Kargl of William and Mary (6-4, 62-2). The sisters did make the final of the ‘A’ Doubles draw. They lost to Charleen Haarhoff and Nadine Fahoum of ODU 8-3.
VOLLEYBALL
This past Tuesday, the volleyball team defeated Liberty 3-1 (26-24, 15-25, 25-15, 25-22). The win improved the Rams’ season record to 8-6. Sophomore Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa/Manheim Twp.) and freshman Marketa Janeckova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Cajkovskeho Olomouc) combined for 25 kills and eight blocks. Sophomore Ivana Rich (Cumberland/Cumberland) had eight kills and five blocks.
