Stephanie’s got the power

It took four games for the VCU Rams women’s soccer team to score a goal. Now, after the past two games, it appears that the Rams can’t be stopped. Senior Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Dartmouth) scored two goals and assisted on a third that nearly gave her a hat trick, as the Rams defeated the Bucknell Bison 3-2 at SportsBackers Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Point-counterpoints: Rams come from behind to down Cavs

Three total shots on goal for VCU all yielded scores as the Rams beat the Virginia Cavaliers 3-1 Saturday.

“We needed three shots on goal, and we scored three times-that’s soccer,” said Jorit Loehr (Bremen, Germany), who netted the game-winning goal in the second half.

Superpowers’ ‘Revival Time’: intelligent booty shakin’

From the driving tone of the talking drum on “Revival Time” to the solid go-go bell framework on “Abami Eda,” Boston and New York City-based Afrobeat band, the Superpowers have created a unique and funky album that any band should be proud of.

The album, also called “Revival Time,” smokes right from the start with a title track that is both frantically-paced and witty.

Horn player O’Brien radiates enthusiasm

When French-horn player Roxanne O’Brien arrived at VCU, she had no intention of pursuing music. O’Brien thought ensemble musicians were, for the most part, volunteers.

Three music-filled years later, O’Brien – now a senior – has come a long way since her na’ve freshman days.

Sarah Palin–awful for people and polar bears

The thought of waking up Nov. 5, 2008, with Sarah Palin second in command of this country makes me want to do something from the “Stuff White People Like” blog and threaten to move to Canada.

I have not yet figured out if I really want to throw out my never-been-used United States passport and relocate to a new, chillier climate-but I heard Montreal is nice in the fall, and I’m really getting sick of the humid weather in Richmond.

Tobacco money debate continues in VCU community

Like most people, Grace Howard learned about the VCU-Philip Morris research contract when elements of the deal were made public by The New York Times on May 22.

“I heard about the issue and I thought it was kind of outrageous,” said Howard, a double major in political science and international studies.

Come for the celebrities, stay for the cause

Enthusiastic support for presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama brought several hundred Richmond-area students to Hyperlink Café for a rally Thursday. Some celebrity appearances didn’t hurt, either. The rally, sponsored by the Campaign for Change, featured appearances by Marlon Wayans, Tatyana Ali and Jurnee Smollett.

Maymont: Mended eagle’s new home

A bald eagle will be the star at the $2.8 million Robert M. Freeman Bald Eagle Habitat & Raptor Valley which opens Saturday at Maymont. The new habitat replaces a smaller, outdated aviary at the park.

The 15-pound bald eagle that arrived at Maymont last month was facing death when it was discovered at a King and Queen County dump in December.

Drought over in parts of Virginia

Some parts of Virginia are now drought-free thanks to Tropical Storm Hanna.

Before the storm rolled through the state this past week, nearly all of Virginia was suffering from drought or abnormally dry conditions.

The U.S. Drought Monitor, a weekly report by federal and academic scientists, now says moisture in about half of Virginia is normal.
