Student wins two local Emmys
In the television world many broadcast journalists work for years to even get nominated for an Emmy Award. Nineteen-year-old mass communications major Sofia Briley, was not only nominated for two local Emmys this past year-she won them.
Briley received the Emmys this past June from the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
VCU helps Philip Morris clean up
Faculty and students alike have voiced outrage in the past months over research contracts with Philip Morris USA, which included clauses of secrecy granting the company unusually restrictive rights over publication.
The wastewater management contract in VCU’s department of biology is often overshadowed by the more controversial contract, which originated in the VCU School of Medicine and involves early detection of pulmonary disease.
Pakistan Marriott blast shows signs of al-Qaida
Taliban militants based near the Afghan border and their al-Qaida allies are the most likely suspects behind a massive truck bombing at Islamabad’s Marriott Hotel, officials and experts said Sunday. At least 53 died in the explosion, including two U.S. Defense Department employees and the Czech ambassador.
Stocks soar as investors bet on gov’t rescue plan
Wall Street had another extraordinary rally Friday as investors stormed back into the market, relieved the government plans to restore calm to the financial system by rescuing banks from billions of dollars in bad debt. The Dow Jones industrials soared about 370 points, giving them a gain of about 780 over two days, and Treasurys fell as money flowed into equities.
Blink Barker badly burned
Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and celebrity disc jockey DJ AM were critically injured in a plane crash Friday. One of their doctors said Sunday he expected them to fully recover. Two of the musicians’ close friends and two crew members were killed when the plane shot off the end of the runway, ripped through a fence and crossed a highway.
VCU presidential search committee announced
A 17-member presidential search committee that will assist the board in selecting VCU’s next president has been announced. The university-wide committee consists of six members of the Board of Visitors, five faculty members, two staff members, two students, one alumnus and one VCU Foundation member.
Dead raccoon tests positive for rabies
A raccoon killed by a Henrico County resident has tested positive for rabies.
Police Lieutenant Doug Perry made the announcement Thursday, a day after the resident called to report a raccoon acting strangely in the 2600 block of Felspar Drive. By the time an officer arrived, the caller had already killed the animal.

CAA blood drive tournament
University Student Commons and Activities is sponsoring the CAA Blood Drive Challenge on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Student Commons, second floor. VCU’s goal is to have 1,000 people donate blood. To sign up, go to www.vablood.org.
