A construction worker was killed Wednesday when a partially built retail and residential building collapsed in a Richmond suburb, officials said.
Emergency crews found the body of Scott Giordano, 38, of Disputanta, Va., about six hours after the collapse and continued to search for others who might have been trapped, said Chesterfield County Fire Battalion Chief Robby Dawson.

College Football
I hate when the officials get involved in a game and help determine the outcome, particularly in a game that’s coming down to the wire. Missouri fans still remember the “fifth down” that helped the Colorado Buffalos beat the Tigers in 1990.
Three shots from Petrone doom Rams
When the VCU Rams and Seton Hall Pirates headed into halftime scoreless, both teams had missed several opportunities to score goals.
The second half was a different story.
Seton Hall forward Samuel Petrone answered a VCU goal with three of his own and added an assist and the Pirates defeated the Rams 4-1 in the final match of the Nike/Alltel Classic at SportsBackers Stadium.
The Verve refuses to give up British-rock roots
With the release of “Forth,” their first album in more than ten years, British rockers The Verve are showing not even a lawsuit from The Rolling Stones can keep them from exercising their signature sound.
“Sit and Wonder” launches the album into trippy drawn-out solos backed by lead singer Richard Ashcroft’s repetitive vocals.
Slightly dampened streets, not spirits, make art walk huge success
The First Fridays Artwalk brought thousands of people to the closed-off streets of downtown Richmond Friday night, despite a bit of rain.
Music and conversation filled the air as people walked from gallery to gallery.
Galleries and restaurants between Belvedere and Second streets were packed with people looking at the new exhibitions.
Driven student answers call to art
In an ideal world, junior Meg Christensen would spend the rest of her life in a classroom. Christensen, an arts-communication major and a crafts minor–, said she could not imagine life without learning.
“It’s pointless if there’s nothing left to learn . there’s no reason left to live,” Christensen said.
Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
Regardless of who wins in November, a different man will be leading our nation. The choice this year seems more dire than in previous elections.
A failing economy, a failed foreign policy and an energy crisis all make for one very competitive election.
