Singer shares intimate moments with audience
Jokes and anecdotes were the main theme for singer and songwriter Aimee Mann Monday night at The National.
Mann played 11 songs from her latest album “@#%&*! Smilers,” as well as other hits, pleasing the mostly 40-and-up crowd.
The observant Mann poked fun at late-arriving audience members.
Daedalus Quartet to thrill VCU Saturday
The 2008-2009 season of the Mary Anne Rennolds Chamber Concerts Series kicks off this Saturday with one of the premiere American chamber ensembles, the Daedalus Quartet. As violist for the group, Jessica Thompson is preparing for an evening filled with drama, wit and musical dialogue.

God’s existence debated at VCU
Atheist author Christopher Hitchens and Christian apologist Frank Turek debated God’s existence Tuesday night, drawing a crowd of about 500 people to the University Student Commons’ Commonwealth Ballroom.
The debate, which was sponsored by the United Secular Alliance of VCU, filled the ballroom, as well as two overflow rooms to capacity.

Transit pass free for VCU students
Transit passes for VCU students are now free for the fall 2008 semester. The passes, once $50, are available to full-time undergraduates and to graduate students taking a minimum of nine credit hours.
The passes enable students to ride the Greater Richmond Transit Company buses, excluding the 96 Fredericksburg Express route.
Kearsarge delivers aid to Haiti
The Norfolk-based amphibious-assualt ship Kearsarge remains off Haiti, providing relief to the storm-lashed island.
The ship was ordered to Haiti from Colombia Friday. The Kearsarge has delivered to Haiti 141 metric tons of supplies, such as flour, rice and beans and 750 gallons of water.
The presidential-campaign trail leads to Virginia
The Democratic and Republican presidential candidates are due in Virginia Tuesday at separate campaign stops.
Sen. John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin will make their Virginia debut at a rally in a Fairfax park.
The campaign moved the event from a Fairfax County high school Tuesday because of complaints the school was hosting a partisan political event during classroom hours.
Richmond woman convicted in killing of VCU student
A 20-year-old Richmond woman has been convicted of robbing and killing a VCU student in March.
Zsabriela Williams entered an Alford plea Tuesday to one count of murder, not admitting guilt but acknowledging there was enough evidence to convict her in the slaying of 19-year-old Tyler Binsted of Mount Jackson.
