Chelsea made short work of its French adversary with goals from Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka.

Another French-English connection saw Liverpool triumph in Marseille. Lorik Cana put the home team up first, but Liverpool pulled ahead thanks to skipper Steven Gerrard’s double.
Roma 1, CFR Cluj 2
Roma, too, could not hold its lead as the Romanians unleashed Juan Culio on a stunned Italian squad to win their first-ever Champions League clash.
Barcelona 3, Sporting Lisbon 1
Barcelona simply dominated throughout thanks to goals from Rafael Marquez, Samuel Eto’o and Xavi Hernandez. Tonel brought a little, but not enough, momentum for his side.
Panathinaikos 0, Inter Milan 2
Inter is a force to be reckoned with because of the return of Adriano and Jose Mourinho.
PSV 0, Atletico Madrid 3
Kun Aguero knocked one back at PSV just nine minutes in. The little Argentine then showed Lionel Messi-like brilliance, chalking up a second. Maniche put away the third.
Basel 1, Shakhtar Donetsk 2
Brazilians Fernandinho and Jadson scored for the Ukrainian Shakhtar with rocket free kicks. David Abraham scored a 90th-minute consolation for the Swiss.
Werder Bremen 0, Anorthosis Famagusta 0
Missed shots from Boubacar Sanogo and Claudio Pizarro cost Bremen the victory.
Dynamo Kiev 1, Arsenal 1
Kiev took the lead after a dubious penalty given to Ognjen Vukojevi?. Theo Walcott, this season’s promising hero, scored in the final minutes for the tie.

AC Milan’s former striker Alberto Giliardino scored twice for Fiorentina but Lyon came back and tied with minutes to spare thanks to Frederic Piquionne and Karim Benzema.
Steaua Bucharest 0, Bayern Munich 1
Daniel Van Buyten and Sebastien Schweinsteiger linked up to put the Germans ahead of the Romanian side.
Porto 3, Fenerbahce 1
Lisandro Lopez and Lucho Gonzalez put Porto up by two in the first 15 minutes. Dani Guiza put the Turks back in the game but Dorvalino Lino sealed the win for the Portuguese.
