MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Stephen Mutisya (Machakos, Kenya) finished fifth in the Navy Invitational 8K run with a time of 25:09.10 to help VCU to a fifth place finish in the 14-team event Saturday. Senior Jay Wyss (Richmond/J.R. Tucker) and junior Piotr Dyras (Jaslo, Poland) also finished in the top 25, finishing 13th and 23rd with times of 25:35.

FIELD HOCKEY
Coming off a four-game road trip, the Rams fell in their first home game of the season, 2-0, to Saint Joseph’s. After both teams went without a goal in the first half, St. Joe’s Anne Schreuders scored in the 55th and 70th minutes. VCU goalkeeper Laura Baker (Kent, England/Langley Park) stopped five shots in the loss.
GOLF
Junior Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg/Blacksburg) was named CAA Golfer of the Week after his fifth-place finish at the Maryland Intercollegiate. After shooting an even par 71 in the first round of the tournament, Griffin fired a 4-under 67 in the second round to help elevate the Rams to a second place finish in the event.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Rams earned their first win of the season Friday night with a 3-0 road victory over Loyola. VCU got on the board early as June Hartman (Virginia Beach/Tallwood) scored in the 18th minute while Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa) followed in the 29th on an assist from Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Dartmouth). Power scored a goal of her own in the second half, converting on a defensive miscue by Loyola in the 62nd minute.
VOLLEYBALL
The Rams improved their record to 5-4 after winning two of three matches in the UVA Invitational this past weekend. VCU opened the weekend with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) loss to the hosts, but bounced back to defeat Appalachian State and Binghamton. The Rams defeated ASU 3-0 (25-19,25-16,25-18) with a balanced attack. Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) led the Rams with 11 digs. The Rams defeated Binghamton later in the afternoon, 3-2 (21-25,25-21,22-25,16-14), behind 19 kills from Ariel Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Southern Guilford). Goncalves added 27 digs in the win.
