Greeks and non-Greeks alike came out for food and fun at the Sorority and Fraternity BBQ at the Commons Plaza this past Sunday.
“The barbeque is a chance for the freshmen and the non-Greeks to come out and meet us,” said Don Ibarra, a biology major.
In the past few years, VCU’s Greek system has been growing steadily. Five chapters have been added, according to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. The university’s Interfraternity Community has seen a 15 percent increase in total membership. As of spring 2008, 845 students belonged to fraternities and sororities, or 4.5 percent of the undergraduate student population, stated a report by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
“It seems like we’re big, because there’s so many people out there wearing letters, but we’re really only 3 percent (of the entire student population),” said Christine Huynh, a dental-hygiene major. “The more expansion, the better.”
