Theatre VCU closes bright season with mediocre ‘Cabaret’

Theatre VCU began its final run with mixed reviews
this Thursday with the musical “Cabaret,” written by
Joe Masteroff.

The popular 1966 musical, which spawned several
Broadway productions and a full-length feature-film, is
a story of star-crossed lovers in 1929 Berlin who idly
watch as Germany descends into Nazi fascism.

Sally Bowles, from West London, England, is a
cabaret dancer at the seedy Kit Kat Klub. She falls in love
with the dashing American writer Clifford Bradshaw.
Aloof and a lush, Bowles allows the world to pass her
by while Bradshaw – disgusted with the growing Nazi
movement’s intolerance of Jews – longs to deliver his
love from the foreseen plight of the country.
