VCU picked up its first conference win
Friday 8-2 at Old Dominion and snapped
a seven-game losing streak. Senior Cody
Eppley (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York)
pitched his second complete game of
the season and improved to 3-3, while
allowing only six hits and one earned run.
The Rams totaled a season-high 14 hits.
Saturday afternoon’s game was rained
out and rescheduled for a double-header
Sunday, which also was washed out. The
double-header became the second and
third games to be called off for the Rams
this week because of rain after the same
thing happened Tuesday at Longwood.
The Rams are now 1-8 in the CAA and
6-19 overall.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Junior Eric Maynor (Raeford, N.C./
Westover) and freshman Larry Sanders
(Fort Pierce, Fla./Port St. Lucie) were
recognized recently for their achievements
during this past season. Each
received an award from collegeinsider.
com; Maynor earned a spot on the site’s
Mid-Major All-America Team, and
Sanders was placed on the Freshman
Mid-Major All-America Team.

MEN’S TENNIS

The Rams knocked off South Florida
4-2 Friday then won 4-1 over Louisville
Saturday. Against South Florida, junior
Martin Schulhauser (Karvina, Czech
Republic) rallied past Mahmoud Hamed
3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to give VCU the clinching
victory. The Rams fell behind by dropping
the doubles point, but rallied and
lost only once in singles play. No. 29
VCU improved to 15-6 this season with
Saturday’s win against Louisville. Coach
Paul Kostin is now only two wins from
becoming the fifth active coach to have
at least 800 wins.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

After dropping two straight matches,
the Rams defeated Florida International
5-2 Saturday as they approach the final
weekend before the CAA Tournament.
Senior Tatsiana Uvarova (Minsk, Belarus)
won her team-high 24th match
of the season 6-4, 6-3 to help the 38thranked
Rams improve to 15-4. Freshman
Kateryna Yergina (Kiev, Ukraine) held
on in the third set 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 for her
14th win of the year. Sophomores Laura
Burns (Hertford, England) and Kateryna
Malakhova (Nova Kakhovka, Ukraine)
also picked up singles wins, and the Rams
earned the doubles point. Sunday’s match
at South Florida was canceled.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Fourteen top-10 finishes at the Colonial
Relays in Williamsburg helped VCU place
eighth out of 21 teams. The quartet of
Jason Gallo (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge),
Jamal Blyden (Virginia Beach/Landstown),
DeAngelo Wilson (Richmond/Prince
Edward County) and Antonio Norvell
(Portsmouth/I.C. Norcom) set a VCU
record in the 4×200-meter relay with a
time of 1:25.43. Senior Grant Matthews
(Chester/Benedictine) earned eighth place
in the javelin with a toss of 163 feet.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

The Rams had seven personal bests
Saturday as the team placed 11th of 21
at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.
Freshman Danyelle Barnes (Aberdeen,
Md./Aberdeen) placed fifth in the 100-
meter dash with a time of 12.40 seconds
and ninth in the 200-meter dash at
24.96 seconds. Senior Frankie Moore
(Chesapeake/Great Bridge) finished in
the top two of the high jump for the
fifth straight meet with a jump of 5
feet 3 inches in rainy conditions. Erika
Banks (Hampton/Bethel), Whitney Key
(Goochland/Goochland), Sharmane
Duren (Richmond/Varina) and Kendra
Griffin (Chesapeake/Oscar F. Smith)
earned their best finish in the 4×400
meter relay of the season at 3:51.41,
good for a fourth-place finish.
