MEN’S TENNIS
The No. 21 Rams dropped to 9-2
after a 4-1 loss to No. 8 North Carolina
in Chapel Hill, N.C., Sunday.
VCU took the doubles point after
the 24th-ranked duo of Sebastien
Ripoll (Mauleon-Soule, France) and
Emil Lindgren (Stocksund, Sweden)
defeated David Stone and Lenny
Gullan, 9-8 (2), and Bobo Delemark
(Danderyd, Sweden) and Stepan
Siska (Prague, Czech Republic)
defeated Clay Donato and Chris
Kearney, 8-5. In singles, Damien
Lacombe (Perigueux, France) was
leading No. 75 Stefan Hardy, but
UNC was able to win its fourth singles
match before it finished.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The 25th-ranked Rams won both
of their matches over the weekend,
7-0 over Richmond and 6-1 over
CAA-rival Georgia State. The Rams
won 14 of 15 sets against the Spiders
and only one match went beyond
two sets. Viktoria Konstantinova
(Hanskovo, Bulgaria) defeated Pamela
Duran 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the No. 1
singles match. Against Georgia State,
No. 35 Tatsiana Uvarova (Minsk,
Belarus) took victory on Court 1 with
a 6-2, 6-2 win over Martina Nitkova.
VCU’s record is now 11-0.
MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
Cary Chaffee (Richmond, Hermitage)
led the Rams at last weekend’s
Virginia Tech Challenge with an
eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter
run, stopping the clock at 8:37.10.
The 1,600-meter relay team also
took home a top-10 finish, placing
seventh at 3:18.32.
WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
Danielle Williams (Virginia
Beach/Salem) stopped the clock at
2:14.78, good for seventh place in
the 800-meter run and a personal
best in the event to lead the Rams
at the Virginia Tech Challenge.
Frankie Moore (Chesapeake/Great
Bridge) placed fourth in the highjump
event with a leap of 5 feet, 6
1/2 inches.
