Emergency text registration might be required for students
With the majority of students ignoring administration pleas to sign up for the emergency text-messaging system, school officials are considering making participation mandatory, said Pamela Lepley, director of University News Services. The text-messaging system is meant to be the primary means of communication with students, faculty and staff about life-threatening emergencies and inclement weather.

WORLD BAGHDAD – The U.S. military acknowledged it killed 15 civilians – including nine children – and wounded four others in an operation yesterday targeting what it called senior leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq. The statement said 19 suspected insurgents also were killed in the attack in a region northwest of Baghdad.

GOLF Sophomore Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg/ Blacksburg) shot a 73 in the final round to earn a ninth-place finish and lead VCU Monday in the Coca-Cola Duke Classic. Griffin’s three-round total was four strokes under par at 212, eight strokes behind tournament champion Jonathan Hodge of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

The VCU athletic department is reminding its athletes of the risks and responsibilities of using social networking sites, said senior associate athletic director Jeff Cupps. Recently, athletic departments across the country have revisited their policies on the issue of student athletes’ use of these sites.

Throw ‘The Book’ at him A man in Singapore has been sentenced to four months in jail for stealing a Bible. The judge who sentenced him admonished him with scripture before he was taken to his cell. He apparently stole the book from a shop last month to replace his old, tattered copy.
