Film Review

Darkly lit and surrounded in smoke and sinful situations, “We Own the Night,” a Scorcese-esque look at crime and the cops that attempt to control it, is saved by its own simplicity. Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix play brothers who, in the conventional crime saga way, are on the opposite sides of the law.

Restaurant Week raises funds, awareness

What if you could choose a three-course meal from local restaurants and pay a total price of $25.07? This week, you can do just that during Richmond’s Restaurant Week, which began Monday and continues through Sunday. Restaurants like The Hard Shell, Acacia, Bacchus, Europa Café and Millie’s, are among 20 local restaurants that have banded together to benefit Central Virginia Food Bank and donate $2.

Free food, music and criticism for art students

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will be hosting College Night Thursday evening with the hopes of drawing a crowd of interested students and faculty from surrounding schools. Featuring the VMFA’s “Look Here” series that has been ongoing since expansion of the museum started in 2005, College Night is a free event that incorporates galleries not featured in the current “Look Here” exhibit.

December graduation makes for chilly reception

The December Grad Finale, which took place at the University Student Commons this past Monday and Tuesday, seemed almost anticlimactic. For the record, I am not trying to undermine the Graduation Office’s efforts. There was a strange ambience in the Commonwealth Ballroom on Tuesday, as though everyone looked tired.

Speakers share tips to reduce risk of breast cancer

Alpha Kappa Delta Phi hosted a brunch Wednesday
to raise awareness, money and support for
breast cancer and its survivors. The two-hour event
featured guest speakers Nancy Harris from VCU’s
Office of Health Promotion and VCU student and
13-year cancer survivor Dora Callahan.

Health professional encourages students to get free flu shots

Better a sore arm than the flu? VCU students seem to think so. More than 100 VCU students have already visited University Student Health Services to get their free flu shot in preparation for the upcoming winter flu season. University Student Health Services is offering free flu shots to full-time students and flushots for $10 for part-time students, since they are not charged the student health fee with tuition.
