VCU dropped a mid-week battle with Hampton,
64-55 in Hampton. Both teams shot just 30.4
percent from the field in the first half, and the
score was 18-18 at the break. Both teams found
their shots in the second half, but the Pirates
were able to pull away thanks to a tight defense
that forced 21 Rams turnovers. Eric Maynor
(Raeford, N.C./Westover) led all scorers with
22 points for VCU. Jamal Shuler (Jacksonville,
N.C./Jacksonville) added 15 points and seven
rebounds.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
VCU improved their season record to 5-0 on
Saturday afternoon with a 64-53 victory over
East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. The Rams
shot only 31 percent in the first half and trailed
26-24 at halftime, but were able to pick things
up and outscore the Pirates 40-27 in the second
half. Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great
Bridge) recorded her fourth double-double of
the season with 24 points and 16 rebounds.
The Rams were stellar on defense, forcing 25
turnovers and holding East Carolina to only 34.5
percent shooting.
