The CT sports editor sounds off

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

For me, nothing says “fire me” like
coaching a team that scores 39 points in
a game and loses by 37. So say goodbye,
Bill Callahan – you are the lucky one to
have achieved this when your Nebraska
Cornhuskers lost to Kansas 76-39 on
Saturday. Callahan has been under fire to
get his team to perform all season, and
this has to be the straw that breaks the
camel’s back. Callahan was a horrible coach
in the NFL with Oakland, and he hasn’t
done any better coaching in the college
ranks at Nebraska. What he has done is
turn a once-proud Nebraska defense into
a laughing stock.

Speaking of laughing stocks, Notre Dame
continued its losing ways, falling 46-44
to Navy – breaking the Midshipmen’s
43-game losing streak to the Irish. Paul
Johnson has done a great job with the
Naval Academy and has made it a very
competitive program within the last few
years, but there is no reason for Notre Dame
to lose to Navy, even in its worst season.
The only good news for Charlie Weiss’ 1-8
squad? Two of its three remaining games
are very winnable. Duke and Stanford are
a combined 4-14 this season, while the
third game against Air Force should be
just as difficult as Navy.

NFL

No comments on Sunday’s games
because of press time, but this week I’ll
take this space to be humble. My picks that
appeared in the season preview have turned
out to be absolutely horrible. New Orleans
to the Super Bowl? Cincinnati to win its
division over Pittsburgh and Baltimore?
Perhaps these didn’t seem like bad picks
to me at the time, but as of right now, I
can only sit around and wonder, what the
heck was I thinking?

AROUND CAMPUS

Basketball season has officially kicked
off after Thursday night’s exhibition
games. Although it was exciting to see
the returning players back in action, it
was newcomers for both the men’s and
women’s teams that impressed me the
most.

On the men’s side, keep an eye on freshman
big man Larry Sanders. In his first
collegiate action, the Floridian recorded
nine points and four blocks. Sanders’ size
and agility will make him a force in the
post on defense.

On the women’s side, junior transfer
Radoslava Bachvarova showed great touch
on her shot during the exhibition victory
over Virginia Union. Bachvarova should
prove to be a legitimate threat on the
outside and an excellent combo to the
inside duo of Quanitra Hollingsworth and
Krystal Vaughn.
