FIELD HOCKEY
VCU defeated Appalachian State 3-0 Friday
evening, bringing to a close a six-match
losing streak. Freshman Flore van Dessel
(Oisterwijk, Netherlands/Odulphus Lyceum)
netted her second goal of the season in the
first half. Freshman Merel Kroon (Amstelveen,
Netherlands/Keizer Karel College) and senior
Jenna Harris (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) added
second-half tallies, their sixth and seventh of
the season, respectively. The Mountaineers did
not manage one shot throughout the match,
while the Rams fired 17. Cary Street Field
will host its final match of the season Oct. 20
when VCU battles William and Mary.
MEN’S SOCCER
The Rams have run their losing streak to
three matches after a strong beginning to the
season. Trevor Banks of Old Dominion scored
the decisive goal with only a minute remaining
in the second overtime to give the Monarchs
a 2-1 victory Friday night in Norfolk. Senior
Sven Meusch (Cologne, Germany) scored the
lone goal for the Rams. VCU was shutout for
the fourth time this season Sunday at William
and Mary, 1-0, on a goal from Thomas Price in
the 59th minute. The Rams dropped to 5-4-2
on the season and 1-3 in the CAA. The team
returns home for matches against Northeastern
on Oct.19 and Hofstra on Oct. 21.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Lisa McKenzie scored for ODU as time
expired in the 110th minute to give the
Monarchs a 2-1 win, halting VCU’s four-game
winning streak that had landed them atop
the CAA standings. Janna Pearson started the
scoring for the Monarchs just after halftime
on a shot to the upper-right corner of the
net. The goal was the first allowed by the
Rams since Sept. 23 at N.C. State, ending 490
minutes of shutout defense. Junior Jasmine
Riley (Arlington/Wakefield) responded in
the 60th minute by scoring a breakaway goal
off an assist from classmate Megan Flanagan
(Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa), her fifth
consecutive match with a goal, before the
dagger from McKenzie in double overtime.
VOLLEYBALL
The Rams downed the UNC Wilmington
Seahawks in straight games at home Friday
night. Freshman Jessica Ujukwu (Sao Poalo,
Brazil/Colegio Dourado) was key for the
Rams, recording 15 kills. VCU excelled in its
