SPORTS BRIEFS

FIELD HOCKEY

The Rams have now dropped their last three
games after a pair of 2-1 losses over the weekend.
Rachel Krumm (Norfolk/Granby) scored 14 minutes
into Friday night’s game against Hofstra to tie
the score at 1-1, but the Pride scored six minutes
into the second half and held on from there to take
victory. VCU met a similar fate on Sunday when
Drexel scored consecutive goals in the second half.
Jenna Harris (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) scored
1:30 into the second half, but the Dragons scored
twice within three minutes to earn the win. VCU
(1-3 CAA, 4-6) is back in action Wednesday when
Longwood comes to Richmond.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

VCU continued its trend of shutting out opponents
Friday night. UNC Wilmington fell victim
2-0 in the CAA opener for both schools. The Rams
have not lost a conference opener since 1999. After
spending the majority of the first half in the middle
of the field, junior Megan Flanagan (Franktown,
Colo./Ponderosa) sent a crossing pass downfield
to Jasmine Riley (Arlington/Wakefield) to set up
the game’s first goal in the 42nd minute. Freshman
Laurel Pastor (Springfield/West Springfield) has
come on strong, scoring on a breakaway down
the left side.

VOLLEYBALL

The Rams won their second game in a row
last Wednesday, defeating William and Mary in
five games, 30-28, 22-30, 30-25, 20-30, 15-10,
in Williamsburg. Outside hitter Ariel Newman
(Greensboro, N.C./Southern Guilford) registered
18 kills and 20 digs while libero Laryssa Goncalves
(Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) had 29 digs.
VCU (2-1 CAA, 4-11) is back in action with road
games against CAA opponents Delaware and
Towson on Friday and Saturday.
