MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Stephen Mutisya (Machakos, Kenya) led VCU for the second
consecutive meet last weekend at the Navy Sea Dog invitational. Mutisya’s
time of 26:21.4 over the eight-kilometer course was good for 57th place,
followed shortly by Dybas Piotr (Jaslo, Poland) in 66th place clocking in
at 26:45.9. The Rams tied with George Washington as a team for 11th
place in the 12-team field with 315 points.

FIELD HOCKEY
The Rams dropped their second game in a row Sunday, both in Philadelphia,
this time in a 3-1 decision to Temple. Each team was unable to get on
the board through the first half, but the Owls put the Rams behind the
eight ball in the second with three quick goals. Alli Lokey scored two for
the host team, and sophomore Rebecca Sullivan (Fredericksburg/Stafford)
netted the lone goal for the black and gold – her second of the season.
With the loss, VCU’s record drops to 3-3.

MEN’S TENNIS
Senior Damien Lacombe (Perigueux, France) reached the championship
round of last weekend’s U.Va. Fall Invitational before bowing out 6-3, 6-1
to defending NCAA Singles Champion Somdev Devvarman of Virginia.
Lacombe bested Reid Carlton, Jason Pinky and Michael James of Duke,
Penn and Penn State, respectively, in his march to the final. Senior Alex
Israel (Marseille, France) split two matches and junior Emil Lindgren
(Stocksund, Sweden) went 1-2.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
VCU began its season at the William and Mary Invitational last weekend
in Williamsburg. The Rams, who finished last season ranked 34th in the
nation, had five participants in the event and were lifted by the sixthplace
finish of senior Tatsiana Uvarova (Minsk, Belarus). Uvarova won
two matches in the Flight A Singles Draw and lost to Ragini Acharya of
William and Mary 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before handling Ela Kaluder
of Arkansas in the consolation bracket 6-0, 6-1.

BASKETBALL
Anthony Grant’s 2007 Coaching Clinic, held Oct. 19-20 at Hibbs Hall
and Franklin Street Gym, will be having a special guest appearance from
longtime NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy. Van Gundy led the Knicks
to an NBA Finals appearance in 1999 and most recently worked as a
color analyst for ESPN in last season’s playoff coverage. The clinic will be
highlighted by individual instruction on up-tempo style of play, pressure
defense, three-point shooting and more.
