IN BRIEF

FIELD HOCKEY

Goals from freshman forward Merel
Kroon (Amstelveen, The Netherlands/
Keizer Karel College) and sophomore
forward Rebecca Sullivan (Fredericksburg/
Stafford) led the black and
gold in a surprising win at Cary Street
Field Friday over the cross-town rival
Richmond Spiders.

Kroon scored her second goal of the
season unassisted from 16 yards out and
provided an assist on Sullivan’s tally in
a win in which the Rams never trailed.
The victory continues the Rams’ unlikely
3-1 beginning to the season, tying them
for second place in the CAA.

VOLLEYBALL

Facing two ranked teams in three
games at the Penn State Classic, the
Rams came away with only one win,
over Colgate, 3-0. VCU was downed 3-2
and 3-0 to No. 24 St. John’s and No. 3
Penn State, respectively. The weekend’s
games drop the Rams to a record of 2-7
for the season.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Rams battled to a 1-1 draw with
St. John’s Friday in Blacksburg at the
Virginia Tech Tournament. Senior mid-
fielder Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar,
Netherlands/Willem Blaeu) scored the
lone goal for VCU off an assist from
senior forward Pat Viray (Reston/South
Lakes) in the first half.

The Rams were upended 1-0 by No.
19 Clemson on a 75th-minute goal from
senior Tate Parrish Sunday afternoon in
the tournament finale. With the loss, the
team drops to 2-1-1.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

VCU got its first win of the young
season Friday afternoon, 2-0, over
Maine in Williamsburg at the Nike/Tribe
Invitational. Sophomore forward June
Hartman (Virginia Beach/Tallwood)
and junior midfielder Stephanie Power
(Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Dartmouth)
each scored her first goal of the season.
Hartman also picked up an assist, along
with junior midfielder Megan Flanagan
(Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa).

Senior goalkeeper Emily Niman
(Pittsburgh/Fox Chapel Area) again
recorded a shutout Sunday afternoon
in the invitational, this time over Oklahoma,
earning the Rams just a 0-0 tie
and bringing their record to 1-2-1.
