BASEBALL
Former Rams relief pitcher Mick Mattaliano has been promoted from shortseason class A to class A by the Baltimore Orioles. Mattaliano played with the Aberdeen Ironbirds and the Delmarva Shorebirds of the South Atlantic League. The Pennsylvania native struck out 13, gave up 12 hits and put together a 1.69 ERA for the Ironbirds before his promotion.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
After a year with an interim, the black and gold have a new head coach. Kendra Warren, a former assistant coach at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, will take the reigns just in time for this weekend’s opening meet. Warren will also head the women’s track and field program. Warren helped lead the 2004 UNC women’s team to victories in the indoor and outdoor ACC Championships.
GOLF
The Rams had three players place in the top 20 at the Valentine Amateur Invitational, hosted at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot. Sophomore Vincent Nadeau (Penn Hook/Purdue University) fired a 3-under (213) over the three-day tournament to finish second. Freshman Thomas Weiler (Gifhorn, Germany/FritzReuterstr) finished 12 th at 1-over (217), while Mark Jargen (Helsingborg, Sweden) shot 5-over (221) to finish 17 th.
MEN’S SOCCER
Senior midfielder Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands/William Blaeu) was named to the preseason All-CAA team, as voted on by league coaches.
