A lot of action took place after spring exams. Here are a few notes from the VCU sports universe …

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Junior point guard Eric Maynor (Fayetteville, N.C./Westover) accepted an invitation to participate in the USA Basketball Men’s Pan-American Games team trials. Tryouts will be held July 12-14 at Haverford College. Players who make the team will participate in the Pan American Games held in Rio de Janeiro from July 13-29. Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim is slated to be the head coach.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Junior center Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) earned an invitation to try out for the women’s USA Basketball U19 team. Tryouts occurred May 17-20.

Hollingsworth was not among the finalists to make the team.

BASEBALL

Sergio Miranda (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/PRBA) capped his collegiate career with a bang. The shortstop was named to the inaugural American Baseball Coaches Associated Rawlings Gold Glove team, awarded to players who excel on defense.
Pitcher Luke Pisker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) was named third-team All American by the ABCA. Miranda was named first-team all region, and first baseman Jared Bolden (Lynchburg/E.C. Glass) was named second-team all region.
