A Date with Design

Cameras were flashing, hot techno music was pumping, and the models were strutting down the catwalk in the latest fashions.

Stepping into the University Student Commons Ballroom on Friday, May 4, was like being transported to Milan, Paris or New York. For one night, Richmond too was a fashion capital.

About 120 of the best student-produced fashions from the fashion design and merchandising department appeared in the sold-out show, titled “Divine Disorder.” The show’s theme was inspired by the chaos theory of fashion adoption.

Divided into 12 segments, the show included garments
produced in the 2006-2007 school year by 29 juniors and 29 seniors. Garment collections included eco-friendly fashion, machine knits, loungewear and cocktail.

The fashion merchandising students devised, produced and
marketed the event. A panel of nine jurors chose one garment as “critic’s choice” for each segment.

The fashion department awarded 18 design and eight merchandising prizes for study abroad and research and gave scholarships to outstanding students. Cotton Inc. also gave awards in three categories: dresses, resort wear and menswear.

At the end of the show, the department recognized design student Soo Hyun Kim, who was one of the top three U.S.
finalists in the REMIX 2007 IFTF International Fur Design Competition in Milan. Her design was a fox fur swing coat with a cape collar.
