BASEBALL

Jared Bolden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) went 3 for 3 with two RBI, but Old Dominion jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and held off VCU the rest of the way as the Monarchs took game one of the series with the Rams 9-3 Friday. Bolden’s perfect day at the plate made him 7 for 7 over two games going back to the victory over Richmond. Game two of the series was postponed because of weather and made up as part of yesterday’s double-header.

MEN’S TENNIS

The 31st-ranked Rams shook off the rust from more than a week’s rest to pick up two wins and improve to 15-7 this weekend. VCU knocked off South Florida 6-1 on Saturday and No. 54 Louisville 5-2 on Sunday. Arnaud Le Cloerec (Plouhinec, France) and Petr Olsak (Novy Jicin, Czech Republic) combined for the most impressive victory over the weekend with a triumph over the nation’s 9th-ranked duo, Slavko Radman and Damar Johnson of Louisville.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The 28th- ranked black and gold broke a three-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over No. 47 South Alabama Saturday in Norfolk to improve its record to 18-6. Olga Borisova (Minsk, Belarus) combined with Marianna Yufferova (St. Petersburg, Russia) to pick up her 79th career doubles win. The victory gives her the most doubles victories in school history. As a duo, Borisova and Yufferova have 58 victories, one away from the school record. Tatsiana Uvarova (Minsk, Belarus) returned to action for the first time since Feb. 18 with an impressive 6-0, 6-3 victory over No. 51 Adrianna Solarova. Yesterday’s home match against Winthrop was postponed because of cold weather.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Junior Jay Wyss (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) and senior James Frierson (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) highlighted the weekend for the Rams. Wyss broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:24.45 at the Colonial Relays. He finished third overall. Frierson won the 200-meter dash at the Duke Invitational with a time of 21.35 seconds.

Star senior Davion Lambert (Richmond, Va./Varina) was named CAA field athlete of the week for last week. He earned the honor after winning the long jump event at the Mason Spring Classic.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

The Rams didn’t win any events at the Colonial Relays on Saturday, but seven team members set personal bests. Nikki Arrington (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) toss of 154′ 10″ in the hammer throw was good for second place. Melissa Douglas (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania), Candace Childs (Fairfax, Va./Hayfield) and Monique Wright (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) set personal bests in the 800-meter dash with times of 2:27.33, 2:28.30 and 2:31.76, respectively. Regan Merriam (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) finished the 5,000-meter run 18:25.46. Verniece Johnson (Mineral, Va./Louisa) ran the 200-meter dash in 25.56 seconds. Jessica Martin (Glade Hill, Va./Franklin County) ran the 100-meter dash in 12.97 seconds.
