BASEBALL
The Rams took the first two games of the series with the George Mason Patriots down to the wire, scoring the winning runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal a 4-3 victory on Friday and a 10-9 win on Saturday. In game one, an error to start the bottom of the ninth provided VCU with the winning base runner. With the game tied 3-3, Matthew Leskiw (Plains, Pa./James) started the inning by reaching base and advancing to second, thanks to shortstop Brent Weiss’ miscue. Sergio Miranda (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) followed with a single that moved Leskiw to third. After Jared Bolden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) was intentionally walked, Barrett Ripley (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) brought in Leskiw on a sacrifice fly to give the Rams the victory.
In game two, Bolden hit a two-out single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, which scored M.L. Morgan (Petersburg, Va./Dinwiddie) and Richard Gonzalez (Puerto Rico) to give the black and gold another one-run win over the Patriots. The pair of wins improved VCU’s record to 4-3 in the CAA and 17-10 overall.
