BASEBALL

The Rams bounced back from a 10-8 loss to the James Madison Dukes with a 10-1 home victory over the UMBC Retrievers. Sophomore first baseman Jared Bolden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) extended his hitting streak to 16 games after an RBI single in the third inning.

Glass) extended his hitting streak to 16 games after an RBI single in the third inning. Freshman Phillip Deane (Richmond, Va./Varina) threw seven shutout innings and struck out four batters to improve his record to 2-0. The Rams improved to 12-8 with the win.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point guard Eric Maynor (Fayetteville, N.C./Westover) was named to the 2007 Mid-Major All-American team by Collegeinsider.com. He was also named to the NCAA Tournament’s All-First Weekend Team by SI.com for his strong play against Duke and Pittsburgh. Maynor averaged 18 points and eight assists in those two games.

RECRUITING NEWS: Various recruiting reports say that coach Anthony Grant has signed four players in the class of 2007.

1) Joey Rodriguez, point guard, 5’11” 160, Winter Park, Fla., picked VCU over Massachusetts.

2) Larry Sanders, power forward, 6’8″ 210, Fort Pierce, Fla., picked VCU over George Washington and Western Carolina.

3) Lance Kearse, small forward, 6’5″ 220, Fort Myers, Fla.

4) Myk Brown, shooting guard, 6’4 180, Gainesville, Fla., picked VCU over Colorado State, East Carolina and Massachusetts. Information courtesy of scout.com

GOLF

The black and gold shot a 36-over 900 to finish seventh in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate held in Pinehurst, N.C. The Rams finished behind Southern Methodist (31-over), in front of Eastern Michigan (39-over), and 20 strokes behind tournament winner Indiana. Senior Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden) led the Rams individually, shooting a 5-over 221 to finish 13th.
