While students were on break, VCU athletics remained in action. Here is a recap of action you may have missed.

BASEBALL

The Rams dropped 2 of 3 games against UNC Wilmington in their first series with a conference opponent of the season. VCU won the first game 13-3, but dropped the following two games 3-0 and 5-3.

BASEBALL

The Rams dropped 2 of 3 games against UNC Wilmington in their first series with a conference opponent of the season. VCU won the first game 13-3, but dropped the following two games 3-0 and 5-3. Jared Bolden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) went 3 for 4 with a homerun, 2 RBI, and 3 runs in the victory. The black and gold followed the series non-conference wins over Iona and Norfolk State.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Rams to a 74-58 victory in the opening round of the CAA tournament. VCU fell hard in the second round however, losing to Delaware 79-58. Following the tournament, Hollingsworth and Krystal Vaughn (Baltimore, Md./Lake Clifton-Eastern) were named second team All-CAA for their efforts during the season. Hollingsworth averaged 13.9 points and 9.5 rebounds this season while Vaughn averaged 15.9 points per game. Vera Chistova (St. Petersburg, Russia) was named to the CAA All-Academic first team for the second year in a row.

GOLF

The black and gold had another solid finish, placing seventh out of fifteen at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational. The Rams shot a 44-over 884 to place behind East Carolina University and in front of Elon University. Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Baldwin School) finished eighth in the individual standings with a 6-over 216.

MEN’S TENNIS

The Rams won 2 of 3 matches at the Blue-Gray National Invitational in Montgomery, Ala. The event matched up some of the premiere programs in the United States. VCU, ranked 32nd, knocked off 22nd-ranked Texas Tech 4-1 in the first match, lost to No. 26 Tulsa 4-0 in the second, and defeated No. 40 Auburn 4-2 in the third. The Rams’ record is now 13-6.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The 15th-ranked Rams won 3 of 4 matches over the break. VCU dispatched Marshall 4-3, Long Beach State 4-3 and New Mexico 5-2 before falling to No. 26 Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. The Rams’ record is now 17-4.
