Bananaphone!

In 1994, children’s music maverick Raffi released the album, with a ridiculously catchy song of the same name, “Bananaphone.” A death metal band and a country singer have covered it. It’s also become an Internet classic.

A YouTube search of “banana phone” turns up 1,470 results. Most of the videos are home videos of people singing and dancing to the song. Lots of the videos are by film students, who turned the song into fully acted-out projects; others have made their own flash videos or drawn animations. There’s even a spin-off, “Badgerphone.” Some videos superimposed the song over edited clips of anime such as “Fullmetal Alchemist,” “Naruto” and “Yugioh.” Still other postings are videos of people manipulating video games, such as Warcraft and Half Life 2, to go with the song. They even made Harry Potter and Winnie the Pooh sing it.

But wherever it may ring, just be sure you answer the call of the bananaphone.

Looking for an entertaining video on YouTube can be like searching for a needle in a haystack. With users uploading at least 65,000 new videos a day, it’s hard to know what to look for and where to find it. That’s why the CT has created the CTube. Issue to issue, we’ll weed through all the good, bad and ugly that YouTube has to offer to find what we think, at the least, will hold your attention. No need to spend more time than necessary on YouTube when Facebook already consumes half of your day, right?
