Not for tots

A television show depicting a man swearing and drinking beer while driving a motorboat has caused the show’s network to be formally reprimanded.

The show comes on at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council said this was not appropriate material to be playing at a time when children were the most likely to be watching.

Global Television has apologized twice for the segment on the action sports show, and called the man’s behavior “crude and inexcusable.”

Death sentence for ant scam

A Chinese man was sentenced to death for scamming people out of 3 billion yuan ($387 million). The man created a fake business that supposedly made wine, tea and medical elixirs using black ants.

Ants are thought to be a natural remedy when steeped in tea or soaked in liquor.

The man sold packages of ants worth 200 yuan to investors for as much as 10,000 yuan. He spent 798 million yuan of the scam money on himself.

More than 10,000 investors signed contracts with the fake company, with the promise of returns up to 60 percent.

Superhero technology

Scaling the side of a building just got a lot faster. A 23-year-old MIT graduate student has invented a battery-powered handheld gadget that gives you the ability to zoom up a rope as fast as 10 feet per second.

The superhero-style tool is envisioned for use by firefighters and soldiers. The gadget was created as part of an MIT-sponsored and Army-funded 2004 design competition to develop rapid ascension technology.

Use of the device requires the buildings to be equipped with ropes anchored on the rooftop. The device will eventually sell for slightly less than $10,000.

The inventor will receive a $30,000 prize.

No “sexy time” at IBM

A man who was fired for visiting an adult chat room while at work at IBM is suing the company for $5 million. He says he deserves sympathy, not firing, since he is an Internet addict.

The man claims chat rooms relieve the post-traumatic stress he has suffered from since seeing his best friend killed in Vietnam in 1969.

The court papers claim the New Yorker’s stress caused him to become a sex and Internet addict. He is seeking protection under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
