C’mon folks. I know plenty of people read the paper. I see copies of The Commonwealth Times strewn about campus, and little shreds in birds’ nests, and in trash cans all around Richmond.
So why is my mailbox empty, huh?
Is everyone so satisfied with the paper and everything in the world that they have nothing to write about? Or is it that no one really cares to exhibit an opinion, save a few staff writers who try to chip in from time to time.
Well, here’s the deal, people. I expect to see some letters for next week’s issue. I’ll even provide an entire series of icebreakers so as to help stir your minds into a frenzy. That’s right, I expect you all to send some hate mail, because I am going to give most of VCU a reason or two to dislike me, and thus, hopefully set forth some form of correspondence.
Here are some icebreakers for ya’ll:
I vote Republican, and I voted for George W. Bush. And I don’t regret that decision. I think the war in Iraq, however mismanaged it was, can still be won with determination and a little more support from people who really need to open their eyes to a bit of realism and see that the world works on a basis of interests; it’s in our interests to knock around countries that even blink the wrong way at us. This whole nation-building business would go a lot better if it weren’t for people who won’t let the soldiers do their jobs. To me, the Democrats are the party of quitters and appeasers, and their leadership will eventually drive our nation in a European-style tailspin of eventual irrelevance on the world stage due to a fear of offending someone.
Even though it’s called “the Landmark Theater” now, it still looks like a freaking mosque and it was dumb to ignore that in the name of cultural sensitivity, which is paralyzing and fragmenting American society.
Barak Obama is not going to win the presidency. He’s also not the most qualified candidate for the job. No chance in heck. C’mon. His middle name is Hussein, and he is a minority. Also, Hillary is not going to win the presidency: Nobody likes her as a person, plus she is a woman, and she won’t get elected partly because of that. The Republicans would have to choke like Romo and the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs to lose this presidential election.
I notice people talk a lot of smack about the Greeks at VCU. I rarely see it from the Greeks. It mostly comes from the art kids, scenesters/hipsters, or whoever the heck the people are wearing pants that are too tight with random (sucky) band shirts and a single-geared bike to take them places. For those of you who want to live and let live, that’s cool, but the people who think acting like a head case and being antagonistic towards generally happy people who could care less what you do is a worthy cause – you people are morons. Uniqueness is not something you buy off a clothing rack, or with weird haircuts or accessories to wear, nor is it something you can force. And take a shower, for the love of God.
Starbucks cups do not make you cool when you hold them for an hour after you finished your coffee. In fact, if you paid five dollars for caffeinated water, I pity you. If status is something to be purchased, it certainly isn’t coming in the form of a paper cup with a cardboard sleeve.
Delegate Frank Hargrove in the General Assembly was right to say that people need to get over slavery. His analogy was horribly flawed, but he is right in the respect that it is dumb for our commonwealth, which is derived from union of the people, to apologize for something a former generation of Virginians did legally. A lot of bad things happened, and slavery is no different, but an apology won’t do anything, because race relations are a much more complicated beast than “Well, nobody ever said sorry.” I think American Indians have a much bigger claim than black Americans to want an apology. Would an apology include money, too? I’m not paying for something I wasn’t responsible for, and it’s an insult to our entire legal system. We are only responsible for what we do and not what others, even family members, have done in the past.
Universal healthcare is a stupid idea: I am not paying more taxes to help treat the next generation of obese people with easily preventable heart problems and get less reliable healthcare for myself. We’re not entitled to every privilege in society simply because it is desirable. By the way, Americans don’t flock to Canada to get treatment for a reason.
I’ve noticed a lot of New Yorkers come down here, many of whom are students at VCU, and they think that because people speak with a twang that inherently the New Yorker is somehow more sophisticated and cultured because of their experiences with overpriced and overvalued crap. The Jets suck, the Yankees suck and dressing metro doesn’t pick up chicks south of the Mason-Dixon Line. We may have a crime problem in Richmond, but at least our city doesn’t perpetually smell like urine.
The Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins are garbage. They are the Axis of Suck.
Communism is the worst economic system a nation could have next to hunting and gathering, and wearing a Che Guevara shirt is clich
