Community takes on Internet networking

MySpace.com. Facebook.com. YouTube.com. These are Web sites visited and revisited daily, and they have revolutionized the way millions of people communicate and share their daily news. With these new avenues of networking, newspapers set out to find out how they work, and why they’re so addictive and whether they’re safe.

‘Krav Maga’

Sweating bodies slammed into the carpet. Amid shouts and grunts, a panting man fought to escape a chokehold. With wide eyes and a broad smile, a woman pulled a knife to her friend’s throat.

It was all in the name of self-defense.

Israeli fourth-degree black belt Moshe Katz taught “Krav Maga,” a mix of different martial arts techniques, to a class of 28 students on Sunday afternoon.

CAMPING at Circuit City

Mariano Harari, 19, sits wrapped in blankets and reading a textbook. He is supposed to be in class at the University of Richmond, but instead he is camping out with 100 other people to receive the first PlayStation3s available in Virginia.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa – South African lawmakers passed legislation recognizing gay marriages on Tuesday despite criticism from both traditionalists and gay activists.

The bill, unprecedented on a continent where homosexuality is taboo, was decried by gay activists for not going far enough and by opponents who warned it “was provoking God’s anger.

SAN FRANCISCO – Hall of Fame football coach Bill Walsh, who built an NFL dynasty with the San Francisco 49ers and revolutionized the sport with his West Coast offense, disclosed that he has leukemia.

Stanford officials confirmed that Walsh, who served as the school’s interim athletic director until July, has told friends and colleagues there that he has cancer.

Nationals find new coach in New York

WASHINGTON – Mets third-base coach Manny Acta is expected to be hired by the Washington Nationals as their new manager, a baseball official told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Nationals hadn’t made an announcement, said he had been told that Acta is getting the job.

In 2009, the University of Richmond will vacate City Stadium and begin playing football at a new facility next to the Robins Center. This will leave only the semi-pro soccer team, the Kickers, as the only draw for City Stadium.

Also in 2009, VCU’s rival Old Dominion will begin playing Division I-AA football.
