Your Turn Letters to the Editor

‘Coming out’ response

Thank you for putting this letter in the Times. It is so amazing the bravery of the student who wrote this. There are so many LGBTQ students here at VCU, and our story is rarely heard. Thank you for being a voice for diversity.

Quality of representation

I’ve tried to be nice and I’ve tried to give as many chances as possible, but it’s gone too far. The members of the SGA I see in my classes are poor examples of all the qualities that student senators are supposed to represent.

For instance, several times this semester and past semesters I have noticed certain SGA senators surfing the Internet in class during lecture and sleeping during class. Are these the sorts of qualities we search for in our elected representatives?

Laziness, apathy and indifference are hardly the characteristics I look for in my representatives, and I am ashamed and outraged that this is the quality of representation that we, the student body of VCU, have to be our face to the administration of the school.

But then again, these are the same people who were elected by an actual minority of the student population. So what can we expect if the only people voting are the cronies of SGA candidates and those involved with SGA themselves?
