Richmond Police were present at the Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson Monument and surrounding areas late last night in response to a suspected bomb. Traffic and pedestrians were prevented from entering the area as a bomb squad investigated the situation. An unidentified object, possibly a backpack, was found on Monument Avenue between South Boulevard and North Mulberry Street. At 11:20 p.m., a charge was set off in an attempt to detonate the object. No secondary explosion followed the initial blast. Police said the object was not a bomb.
