College means thrifty

Sitting out there, among the freshly wiped down Shafer tables, sits a vast crowd of students who look eclectic, time-warped and second hand.

No, these students are not poor, they’re expressive. More and more students have realized that treasure can be found cheaply and only a couple of blocks away from campus.

Thrift stores in the Richmond area have given students cheap access to art supplies, apartment make overs and mostly affordable fashion. Layered beyond dusty frames and broken porcelain, there are aisles of decade decadence that are nostalgic of a hip and rebellious America.

Fueled by the cheap prices and the locality of thrift stores, the campus is on a stylish pulse with the rest of the country.

Two great stores to check out would be Fantastic Thrift, located in the Fan, offering lots of clothes. It’s within walking distance from campus down on Main Street and it’s a great place to stop by if you’re on the way to Carytown.

Diversity Thrift, which used to be just a block away from Fantastic Thrift, has moved across Broad Street, close to the Diamond baseball stadium. The store still offers not just clothes but lots of old appliances, kitchenware, furniture and much more.

You can stop by the Salvation Army that you’ll pass on the way to make it more worth your while, but Diversity Thrift alone is worth the trip and money saved.
