VCU offense falters against Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Redshirt freshman Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great Bridge High School) scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds for VCU, but it wasn’t enough to beat homestanding Delaware.

NEWARK, Del. – Redshirt freshman Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great Bridge High School) scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds for VCU, but it wasn’t enough to beat homestanding Delaware.

The Rams struggled offensively, hitting only 27.3 percent of their attempts and shooting 2 for 14 from behind the arc. The Blue Hens defense held strong, forcing 25 turnovers and limiting the Rams to their lowest scoring output in 25 years.

The game was relatively close in the first half with neither team leading by more than three points

during the first 12 minutes.

The Blue Hens then used an 8-0 run to go up 24-15 before the Rams cut it to 28-25 with 1:38 left in the first half.

That was as close as the Rams would get. The Blue Hens opened the second half scoring 10 straight points and building a 40-25 lead with 12:18 remaining in regulation. The Rams struggled to hit shots and the Blue Hens maintained the lead for the rest of the game.

Tyresa Smith scored a game-high 19 points and hauled in 12 rebounds to lead four Blue Hens scorers in double figures.
