Dixon lifts men’s basketball to first win of the season in his hometown

Junior forward Renardo Dixon (Houston, Texas) tipped in B.A. Walker’s (Onancock/ Nandua High School) missed jumper Saturday with 1:02 to go at Houston to give the Rams a 62-61 victory.

The tip-in broke a 60-all tie, but Houston’s Lanny Smith was fouled on the following possession, giving Houston the opportunity to pull even again. Smith made one of two free throws with 45 seconds remaining.

After VCU (1-1) missed a shot with 14 seconds to go, Houston grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the court for the game’s final possession.

VCU was able to knock the ball out of bounds with 2.6 seconds left. Then Houston forward Jahmar Thorpe missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

The Rams had to come from behind because Houston built a 16-point lead after a 24-4 spurt in the first half.

But the Rams used their own 10-1 spurt to pull within 41-38 with 11:30

Nick George (Manchester, England) led the Rams with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Walker finished with 14 points.

George paced the Rams with 14 points and eight rebounds. The team fell to Appalachian State 51-47 on Tuesday, Nov. 22, in their first regular-season game.

George tied the game at 7 with a dunk, but the Mountaineers scored with 30 seconds remaining and were able to stop the Rams the rest of the way.

The Rams host Elon Wednesday at 7:30.
