When student organizations disagree about any matter, they soon may have a new mediator discussing their situation, especially if they receive funds from the Student Government Association.
Ali Faruk, the chief justice of SGA’s judicial board, told students at this semester’s final Roundtable meeting that the SGA wants to become involved in the organizations’ mediation process.
“We’re in the process of working the SGA into that process to make us more accessible to students,” he said.
If two student organizations now have a conflict, Faruk told the organizational members that Timothy Reed, the director of the Student Commons and activities, serves as their mediator.
Earlier in the semester, Faruk said, he explained to the Roundtable representatives about the judicial board’s availability for mediation between student groups.
As of now, the chief justice said the board has one mediation in progress.
In further business at the Roundtable meeting, Jessica Lee, a member of the co-sponsorship committee for the Fast-a-Thon, said the Fast-a-Thon proceeds went to the Katrina Relief Fund and to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
“For each of those people who fasted we got $2 for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank,” she said. “So double that is about $3,600 going to Louisiana.”
In all, she said 1,825 people fasted for one day, which she deemed a significant increase from last year’s 1,400 people.
“We’re still trying to get money from businesses to see if they can add onto the effort,” Lee said, adding that more than 400 people attended the banquet. “At the actual event we raised about $250 more for Louisiana. In addition, we raised $400 to aid the Pakistan Earthquake relief project.”
Aaron Page, a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity, then promoted the Toys for Tots nonprofit organization by asking the Roundtable organizations’ representatives to help donate unwrapped toys for 16-year-old children and younger.
