Lady Sovereign – ‘Vertically Challenged’

The new queen of Brit pop-rap has finally released her U.S. debut, “Vertically Challenged.” Maybe you’ve heard of her and maybe you haven’t, but you better believe that you are going to hear a lot from her in the near future. With an impressive past already behind her, opening for acts like The Streets, Obie Trice, Dizzee Rascal, Basement Jaxx, D12 and many others, Lady Sovereign is ready to now jump up and over these names and into the spotlight.

No, this isn’t just another girl pretending to rap, she actually can rap.

At only 19 years old, Lady Sovereign is just a baby in the world of rap music, but already has impressed Jay-Z, who reportedly is trying to get her on Def Jam Records.

A few have called her “Feminem,” a name given to her because of her fast, high-pitched rapping style and her at times humorous lyrics. But Lady Sovereign wants nothing to do with that.

“Vertically Challenged” is an eight-song EP that contains four remixes and four new tracks. Adrock from the Beastie Boys even jumps in to remix the song “A Little Bit of Shhh.” The EP opener, “Random,” is very much that – random – but it really does show what the S.O.V., as many call her, has to offer. You get a feel of her humorous side, her range in rapping vocals, her references to other rap songs and her amazing original lyrics.

This is definitely something new and refreshing for the rap world, a world where Lady Sovereign can surely rise to the top in the near future.
