“Carry Me” makes weekend debut

Richard Newdick Theatre in the Shafer Street Playhouse, Nov. 4 and 5 at 8 p.m. Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m.

Directed by Jenny Hundley

Set in Jackson Ward in 1968, “Carry Me” is Jenny Hundley’s thesis theater project. The show pays homage to the local historical neighborhood through democratically driven humor.

“It’s an attempt to get at the issue of racism through satirical political humor,” Hundley said.

Hundley wrote and directed the play after spending two years researching. The play is based on Sidney Poitier’s directorial debut, “Carry Me Back to Morningside Heights.”

“The scene design in itself reflects everything classical about the architecture of historic Jackson Ward,” scenic designer Lara Rhyner said. “Many Richmonders who live in it are unaware of it’s history.”
